About the Tour

The tour to Palccoyo Mountain (Cordillera de Colores) is the perfect alternative for travelers who want to marvel at the rainbow geology of the Andes without undergoing the demanding physical wear and tear of the traditional Vinicunca route.

This full-day excursion takes you through pristine landscapes, Andean communities and valleys crossed by the Salka River, culminating in a set of three red mountains and an impressive stone forest.

Places to Visit and Main Attractions:

  • Salka Valley Route: Landscape tour along the left bank of the Salka River, observing the local flora and fauna.
  • Palccoyo Mountain Range: Unlike Vinicunca, here you will not see a single mountain, but three peaks that exhibit the beautiful stripes of mineral colors.
  • Bosque de Piedras and Apu Ausangate: At the top, you can walk among immense pointed rock formations (Bosque de Piedras) and get privileged views of the imposing snow-capped Ausangate, the highest and most sacred mountain in Cusco.

Why book this experience?

Accessibility and comfort. The walk from the starting point at Wallata Q’asa to the viewpoints takes only 40 minutes on a relatively flat trail. DAY 01

Light Walk to the Palccoyo Colored Mountain Range

We will begin with pickup at your hotel in Cusco between 4:00 and 4:30 a.m. We will travel for 1 hour and 30 minutes to the town of Cusipata, where we will stop to enjoy a nutritious breakfast buffet.

We will continue the trip in our vehicle for about 2 hours along the left bank of the Salka River, until we arrive at Wallata Q'asa, the starting point of the route in the community of Palccoyo. From here, we will undertake a light walk of approximately 40 minutes. During the journey we will observe South American camelids (alpacas and llamas) until we reach the main viewpoint (4,900 meters above sea level). We will have free time to photograph the three colorful mountains, the Stone Forest and the majestic Apu Ausangate.

After connecting with nature, we will return to mobility to head back to Cusipata, where a restorative buffet lunch awaits us. Finally, we will return to Cusco, arriving approximately between 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
